The Two Types of Break Points
Break Point
The Only Path to Victory
>Two words
>Context: Tennis
In tennis, break point is winning time.
In order to win a tennis match, you must break your opponent’s serve at least once per set. That could mean one service game, or as little as a single point in the tiebreaker when your opponent is serving, called a mini-break.
A break point, then, is a point that will give you a break of serve if your opponent is serving.
Earning and converting a break point opportunity is the only way to emerge victorious.
Breakpoint
The Moment of Transformation
> One word
> Context: Web Development
In front end web development, a breakpoint is a screen size where the best solution is to change the layout.
For example, a 4-column layout might need to become a 2-column layout when a screen size reduces to 992px, and then a 1-column layout when the screen shrinks to 768px.
We set individual “breakpoints” in the code to determine when to initiate a layout change, and write different layout code that will apply only when that measurement condition is true.
At breakpoints, we transform.
Transform and Win
Combining these two concepts is powerful.
When we earn a break point opportunity, we are also presented with a breakpoint opportunity.
A chance to transform. To take the lead. To start a comeback. To become something we weren’t before.
We must first work to create the opportunity, then seize the moment and convert it. Upon conversion we transform into something new. Our layout changes.
Have you created your break point opportunity? Is this it? Can we help you convert it?
